I have been legally blind for 13 years. Every year my vision declines more and more. Many people ask me how I deal with the loss of something so precious, but few understand the wonderful world around them when they use their hearing and sense of touch and smell. I will not try to tell you that being blind is wonderful. It is hard, I just learned to accept the positive side of things, try to accept my new limitations and do the best I can.
The main reason that being blind is so difficult is due to the way that sighted people react to me. Many treat me as if I have a communicable disease. Several treat me as if the loss of my vision also affects my hearing. For example, I have found that sometimes people will talk very loudly to make sure I can hear them. =] There is nothing wrong with my ears...yet. Then there are the few who treat the blind as if their vision loss has affected their mental capabilities. People will talk very slow like we can not understand normal conversation. When asking those around us to describe things most people can not understand the need we have for details. It is the difference between describing the sunset as red and wonderful (if you are totally blind and have been for your whole life...what is red?) or as a large warm glow that slowly fades into the horizon. Can you close your eyes and feel the sun on your face? How would you describe how the sun feels as a thin cloud passes in front of it and then is gone? How would you describe the cloud?
Those of us who are struggling with vision loss after having once had good or reasonably good vision face a double standard. You see we are not totally blind but we have to re-learn how to live. This includes learning to not trust the limited vision we may have. We have to re-learn how to cook, clean, do basic tasks and even walk and cross streets on your own all over again. Somewhere along the way we lose the independence that we have known for a good portion of our lives to date. We do not fit into the world of the sighted because we can not “see” as they do; but with the limited vision that we do have, we do not fit totally in the world of the non-sighted either.
Dealing with the loss of vision can be very difficult on the emotions as well. Studies have shown that depression, in varying degrees of severity, is a common factor in people with significant vision loss. This is hard on the visually disabled as well as those who are closest to them, family members, friends and care givers. Light sensitivity, migraines and insomnia are also common factors. But even with these problems many visually impaired and blind people live productive lives, have homes, families and careers.
There are many resources available to learn more about Vision Loss, the Blind and Visually Impaired, Braille and Guide Dogs/Service Animals.
In the United States, the three most prominent organizations are the National Federation for the Blind, the American Council for the Blind and the American Foundation for the Blind. Each state also has their own Blind Center or State Resources for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
For those outside of the Untied States, you can do an internet search for “Resources for the Blind and Visually Impaired” specific to your area.
We, the visually impaired and blind are your parents, children, family members and neighbors. We can be that person who just passed you on the street and unless we are using our canes or Guide Dogs you may never have even noticed. Vision loss and blindness can happen to anyone regardless of age, race or nationality; but as our population grows so does the age related vision losses. We are a growing minority.

Big Rig Dishcloth©
My wonderful husband has driven "Rocky Mountain" Super Tankers in the oil fields of Eastern Utah for over 20 years. The truck he drives is 110 feet long, has 36 wheels and 129,000 lbs. He hauls 290 - 300 barrels of crude oil per day. The driving conditions are mild to intolerable. He drives from dirt roads and clay/mud locations (off road driving) to rural roads, busy city and interstate. I come from a long line of truck drivers and so I am used to having everyone gone all the time. I am lucky that he is home every night.
In honor of Tracy, my husband, and all of the hard working drivers out there who help to keep our country moving...This pattern is dedicated to you.
THANK YOU BARBARA! She has graciously helped with corrections on this pattern! =)

Busy Week, New Patterns
I have had a very busy week. We were involved in an altercation with a very large deer on March 13th. This helped to delay things a bit.
I have finished the patterns for the Big Rig (18 wheeler cab). This is only the first version. There is a second version that I do not have an image of yet. I also finished the Air Force. Finally I have finished the pattern of the Marines but do not have an image of it yet.
I will be uploading the full patterns later tonight to the blog and in pdf and doc format on my free patterns group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wicketstitch/ I hope everyone likes them.
I am working on the Seabee’s, the Canadian Navy and Medic, and a Fairy. I hope to have these done by the end of next week.
It does not take that long to finish the patterns but it does take time to proof them with an actual finished dishcloth that I can take a picture of for the pattern. I do not like to post patterns unless they have pictures with them. I think this makes it easier for everyone. On rare occasions I will post just the pattern. If you work it up and take a picture, please send it to me off list. I will credit any pictures I use, that are not my own to that person on the pattern I use their images on.
As always, if you have any ideas about what you would like to see in a pattern, please let me know. I have a growing list of projects and would gladly add your ideas to it.

New Stitch Markers
I have decided to try my hand at designing and creating my own Stitch Markers. I may be selling these eventually, in sets of five. Since I did not have any fancy stitch markers of my own, I decided to make some for myself. This is my "Main" stitch marker. Mia is 1 inch by ½ inch and is used for the beginning of rounds on a circular needle. She fits up to a US size 10 ½ needle. The coordinating bead stitch markers (not shown) to mark each pattern is silver with pink beads.I will be hand crafting each figure and posting them for sale, either as a set of one "main" marker and four coordinating smaller bead markers or just the one main marker alone.
These figures will be different. Because they are hand crafted there will not be any two alike. There will also be figures of different sorts from bears, bunnies, chicks, dragons, horses, lions, butterflies, ladybugs, frogs...and such to whatever my imagination (or your requests) can come up with. The target size is 1 inch or smaller and set to fit up to a US size 10 ½ needle. I will let you know as this progresses. I may be selling them on eBay as well (I haven’t decided yet).
Life and Military Dishcloth Patterns
Life is fun. Recently I have become so caught up in designing that I have forgotten to take care of some business that I must do. For the next few days I will not be available much...but I will be back soon!
I have completed the US Eagle Square/Dishcloth the Navy Eagle Dishcloth, the Army Eagle Dishcloth the Coast Guard Dishcloth and the Air Force Dishcloth . The Marine Dishcloth and Seabees Dishcloth are done, but I do not have a photo yet. They are available at my Wicketstitch Yahoo group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wicketstitch/ If you have any suggestions for future military themed cloths please email me at: AutumnRa@gmail.com .
What is the difference between them? These are all taken from the actual logo’s of the military branches. The Navy Eagle has an anchor in it’s talons. The Army Eagle holds a branch and arrows. The Coast Guard is two anchors crossing a life preserver. The Air Force was a bit more difficult. It is a stylized Eagle with the words Air Force at the bottom. The Marines are proving to be the toughest of all. I am trying to incorporate the overall silhouette of their logo into the dishcloth.
I am hoping to have these cloths posted by the end of the week. Until then please enjoy the US Eagle Square/Dishcloth, the Navy Eagle Dishcloth, the Army Eagle Dishcloth, and the Coast Guard Dishcloth...and the Hummingbird and Butterfly too.
(Oh, on a side note: Someone asked me if the butterfly has a head. Yes it does, but it is incorporated into the center body so it is not very noticeable. The thing that sets that portion apart is the antennae. )
And finally, I am working on a Big Rig (18 - Wheeler) dishcloth and about three more hummingbirds...so have patience, theier coming! =)

Navy Eagle Dishcloth©
This is a time when political pressures and public opinions are changing the way that policies are handled in our government. Now I am not going to get up on a soap box here and "preach" to anyone about how things should be. I just wanted to share this with everyone to honor those of our brave soldieries who have fallen in the line of duty as well as those at home and abroad who are working to help keep all of us safe.
My brother is an Assistant HazMat Coordinator in the United States Navy. He works very hard, is raising a wonderful family and attending University with high honors. I am so very proud of him and what he is doing.
In special honor to all those who serve and for my brother...I have created this new Free Dishcloth Pattern. I hope you enjoy it.
